01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
At Hama Coffee, you choose from single-origin coffees rather than blends. The menu describes the medium-dark-roast Kenyan as having “aroma and body”, the medium-roast Ethiopian as offering “acidity and aroma”, and the dark-roast Mandheling as rich and bitter. Roast level and flavour notes help guide the choice. The listed price for a hot Kenyan, Ethiopian or Mandheling is ¥450 each; iced Mandheling is ¥510.
Some visitors say the iced Mandheling’s pronounced bitterness suited their taste, while others found the acidity in the light-roast iced coffee balanced rather than too strong. Even iced coffees can taste quite different depending on the beans, so you might start with the menu notes and try another roast for your next cup.
You can also buy freshly roasted beans to brew at home. One customer who made their purchase at home noticed that the grounds swelled considerably when hot water was poured over them, taking it as a sign of freshness. Banana coconut cake is also listed as a coffee accompaniment. Choose between enjoying a cup and cake in the café or taking beans home for a later brew.
